This Jamia Minhaj Ul Sharia Darul uloom Karachi is based in Orangi Town which has a population of 2.5 million people. The Islamic school is situated on the outskirts of the main city. This main Darul uloom serves the local community in their religious and welfare needs.
All the below video clips have accompanying audio voice commentary to explain all the issues facing the Dar ul uloom so you would require speakers in the computer
Main Musjid area
This is the main musjid area where the kids pray their 5 times prayer
The Madrasa support approximately 2600 children - 1000 boys and 1600 girls. Vast majority of the young boys and girls are from very poor backgrounds or are orphans. The orphans are from the Kashmir (Muzaffarabad) Earthquake affected areas (Balacoat area). The main principle Molana Akbar spent months working with many NGOs from all over the world to help co-ordinate the relief efforts. They helped more than 150,000 people with food, water and shelter (They have also published a detailed report on their workings)
The Forgotten Girl Orphans of the Earthquake reading Quran
These small young girls most of whom are orphans from Kashmir. The madrasa looks after their needs for food, shelter and teaching. What they desperately need is a female doctor who can look after their health problems. That is a Major concern for the principle that due to the lack of funding they cannot organize this.
In this clip we show the upper floors of the girls darul uloom where 1600 stay and study the Quran and become Huffaz, Aalimas - Most of these girls have no parents they died during the Earthquake i.e. are orphans
Many of these girls are 12 years of age and the Earthquake has left them mentally scared with memories of the quake. At times the women responsible in the madrasa would console these little girls who would spend nights crying with desperation to meet their parents (who have passed away).
This Institute is one of the biggest in Karachi and covers an area which is one of the most deprived and poorest area in the whole of Pakistan.
The Institution also runs 35 branches which are based all over Pakistan especially in the rural parts of Pakistan and cover 8000 students – providing poor children with basic religious as well as other knowledge's such as English, Geography etc.
Here we view a Doctor dispensary: The children come and get themselves checked up
Here the boys have come for medical help. With limited resources they go by on what they can get. The biggest problem is that there is NO real health care geared towards the girls who have other problems. Molana Akber is trying to arrange a female doctor to look after the needs of the girls. But due to limited funds they have not yet secured a female doctor.
This Orangi Town madrasa in Karachi provides from basic all the way to advance Aalim courses where they learn books such as Sahih Bukhari and Muslim. Every year approximately 300 Huffaz and 150 Aalim (this figure includes both boys and girls).
The madrasa run from Zakat and Sadaqat donation - Since all the children are from very poor backgrounds they cannot afford to contribute their fees. If you wish to donate to help these poor and orphans then contact the Madrasa on the above numbers. Alternatively you can come and visit the school for yourself and asses their needs. If you wish to adopt or foster an orphan then contact the principle.
Water shortage problem and finding a solution
Water is a major concern for the madrasa and in this clip drilling a tube-well to find water in the ground is underway.
Majority of students are from the Earthquake affected areas - So this madrasa Orphanage house: If you wish to donate to support an orphan for the year the cost is only Rs 18,000 (Which equates to UK £133 or US $170 approximate). You can make a contribution make a change in their lives for the better.
Here a poor man and his family in extreme poverty who live near the madrassa: His children study at the dar ul uloom
Water Shortage in Orangi Town
Water shortage is a major problem for the madrasa and the area at large. The water comes in tankers to the madrasa but ideally they need a main pipeline coming to the building to solve their problems for the long run. To get a pipe line from the main supply to the madrasa will cost Rs 20 million (which equates to £200,000) - That kind of money the madrasa just does not have.
A person donates 8 cows to the madrasa
8 cows will provide milk for 30-40 children but still not enough when you have 2600 children
The final dream to build an Islamic University
Molana Akbar has a life long dream to set up an Islamic University where locals and International students (Open to all faiths) can come and learn Islam and other branches of learning such as Islamic Finance, Banking, Islamic Economics etc. For poor locals it will be a way for them to become educated and come out of the poverty circle. They have the land which was donated to them but no real funding to get the project going.
